  • 8n Engine Oil Quantity
  • I have zero experience with tractors, but recently purchased a Ford 8n. I decided I should change all of the fluids and that went pretty well except for refilling the engine oil. Everything I have found online says the 8n should take six quarts of oil, yet I am up to seven and a half, and it is just barely registering on the dipstick. Also the engine is knocking slightly more than before I drained the old oil (which was to the full level on the dipstick). I'm fairly certain the dipstick is original to the tractor and seems to be the correct length based on all information I could find.

And yes, I am certain I actually put seven and a half quarts in, and none has drained out.

  • Have you identified the root cause problem? What happened? Have you since fixed this?

  • Yes, everyone was right. Apparently the dipstick from the transmission was moved to the engine at some point, which obviously led to an incorrect reading.

I ordered a new dipstick from just8ns.com and hopefully no permanent damage was done!

Anyway, the tractor is running great now. Thanks again to everyone for the help!

  • Welcome aboard the NTC –the best Internet source for vintage Ford Tractors. Are you new to tractors in general or just new to Ford Tractors? You needn’t go anywhere else to find everything you need to know about these old Ford tractors –we have it all right here. Look into our HOW-TO’s and MANUALS forums for a ton of information, and it is all available to download for free. Now, you’d best stop what you are doing with the oil because something ain’t right. Yes, N crankcase holds 5 quarts and oil filter & canister holds 1 quart. Since you are a probie, it is highly recommended that you invest in the essential manuals if you want to be an N owner. Three in particular are very important. They are the original 8N Operator’s Manual; the I&T F-04 Manual; and the 39-53 MPC (Master Parts Catalog). Here is some info from the F-04 Manual on the engine oil filter canister, dipstick, and crankcase fill tube and breather element –all located on the LH side of engine. Are you filling the engine oil thru the tube after breather is removed? The transmission and hydraulic oil filler is located on top of the shifter cover –the large hex nut will loosen it but it is not threaded, only has spring clips. The hydraulic dipstick is located on the RH side inspection cover.

  • Should take 5 quarts. The dip stick is part number 9N-6750 used from 1939 to 1952 and is 12" long. I don't recall them having anything but a fill line on them.

  • Thanks for the part number, Just8ns had one left!

  • Did you change the filter?

  • My rpm gauge is working in reverse now as well. The lower the rpms, the higher it reads. It was working perfectly before. Also the engine doesn't want to run much past half throttle. I only had eight quarts of oil, guess I will get some more tomorrow and see what happens.

  • RPM gauge is a different problem had nothing to do with changing oil.
Do not put any more oil in it only takes 6 qts. You need to drain 2 qts. out and get correct dip stick.

  • Make sure you didn't get the 2 dip sticks mixed up! Happens more often than we think!!! Short one goes in the rear.

  • My rear dipstick is an old bolt someone shoved in there. I'm pretty sure the one in the engine is correct though because next to the full line it says "with all cylinders extended."

  • Well that's a relief, I thought my tractor was haunted or something!

Thank you everyone for the quick replies and passing on your knowledge to a noob, I certainly appreciate it!

  • Wrong stick! That is the rear stick.

  • You have the wrong stick. People use whatever they can for dip sticks in old tractors. I have one that a previous owner marked with a dremel tool. He marked it full and full running. It also has the original marks. So I’m a little nervous about it but use the previous owners mark. You put six quarts in an 8n with oil filter change and your good to go.

  • "with all cylinders extended." That is referring to hydraulic cylinders. You have the wrong dip stick.
