  • Plug wire tube
  • I'm rewiring an early '39 9N and noticed that my spark plug wire conduit tube has five, not four wire openings. My later '39 tractors all have four plug wire openings. Can someone tell me what the fifth hole is for? Do any of the wires in the wiring loom use this hole, or do they all go out the end by the coil? Thanks so much!

  • Here's my 1939 9N Wire Loom, with 4 plug wire ports.

  • Here is one I used on a 44 2N that I had. I had to use the fifth hole because the fourth hole was too close to the plug to make the connection.

  • HiYa Brett-
The old saying, 'a picture is worth a thousand words' always applies so if you can post some. I'm spitballin' here, but I don't see any 5-Hole conduits in the MPC's. Perhaps Scott Deppen could add more if there is evidence of such a part. I'd surmise you have an aftermarket type or someone farmerized an original. There was the 9N loom, then the shorter 2N loom used only on the wartime models with the magneto, and then the 8N type. The 8N used a shorter loom. The 9N/2N and 8N only have four ports for the sparkplug wires. Note the 2N-12281-A conduit used with the magneto has only three ports and the #4 spark plug wire exits from the rear of the loom.

  • Thanks, Tim! I'm traveling right now, but will post a pick when I get back home. Interesting to know about the wartime tube.

  • Just a stab in the dark. Is it possible that the 5th hole was for the coil, generator/magneto or later light feed?

  • I'll research deeper for more info from the MPC's on a 5 Hole other than it is a hockey term referring to the space between a goalies legs whereby a puck can be slipped thru for a goal... ; > ) (grin). The March, 1940 MPC lists 4 looms/conduits, 12281, A,B,C,& D but diagram shows only a 4-hole loom. As stated, the 2N wartime tractor used a shorter loom (pictured) with the magneto. Lighting kits were never factory installed items on N's, always dealer optional accessories. Wiring looms never had any provisions for light wires because of this and because the headlight wiring was never thru the loom anyway. The coil wire fed out of the front downward pointing port with plug wires to cap. It appears more than one person has a 5-holer.

  • Brett, #90 four hole loom, other 39 here #6??? is also four hole. Other early 39 is at Joel's in NJ. I do have an extra NOS four hole here if needed. As of now plan on being up in May sometime for fishing if ok with you and yours....

  • Hi Paul, Thanks for the note, and the generous offer. Joel says 91 has a four hole also, but sounds like he has a five hole one kicking around. Hope to see you in May... that lunker is still out there!

  • I just looked at 9N 445. Only four holes in the tube. I have several other 9Ns and none of them have a tube with 5 holes.

  • Harold,
Thanks for checking- this five hole version is on 9N496, but I've never run across it on other 9n's, but a friend told me he's seen the five hole version on other early '39's.

  • Maybe Tim Daley will know the answer to this. There was such a variance in the early 9Ns.
