  • Wont start
  • I have a 8N that wont start. When I bought it the carb was completely seized and corroded. I bought a new one and it still wont fire. I took out the plugs and all 4 cylinders have spark. I put gas in each cylinder and still it doesn't start, There is compression in all cylinders. I even used a small amount of starter spray. It acted like it wanted to fire but still wouldnt start.

  • You need to adjust the carburetor. Also, you probably have a week spark or stuck rings. Cause starter fluid should make it go.

  • "I put gas in each cylinder"

You may need to pull those plugs and burn the excess gas off of them. When they are wet it is almost impossible to start them.

After that, go along with Bruce's post.

    Good Luck

  • Jack,Try putting a teaspoon of motor oil in each cylinder replace plugs and spray some starting fluid in the carb intake while cranking it over trying to start it.

  • Den,

It's not me that is trying to start one. Post under Monte's post. He still needs to dry those plugs.

All that does is wash the walls and reduce compression. Stick with the starting fluid.

    6 volt or 12 volt?

    Front or side distributor?

I donít know why your tractor isnít running. Sure, I can make a reasonable guess. Actually, I can make a lot of guesses.

Donít guess at the cause of the problem; guessing can get expensive. And leave you breathless chasing every guess.......it could be this, it could be that......just troubleshoot the problem and leave the guess work for buying Lottery tickets.

I might not be able to tell you why your tractor isnít running but I sure can tell you how to figure it out yourself.

Check for spark and fuel. (see tip # 13)

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

And do not buy a new part for the tractor until you can answer this question: how do I know the part on the tractor is defective?

Once you narrow the problem to spark or fuel, post back and tell us what you found (and how you found it) and you will get plenty of help to get your tractor running.

    * Don't own an adjustable gap spark checker? Buy one! Not a test light! Until then, take an old plug, open the gap 1/4" ground it to the head & look for spark. Itís not the color of the spark that counts; itís the distance it jumps.

  • so what follows if you got about 14 + ounces of gas in 2 minutes and spark jumping a 1/4 " gap on a 6 volt system? This is the first "break" in the weather that allowed me to get back on my "wont start" tractor. Thanks.

  • Remove the plugs, check the gap .025 and wash them off w/ brake cleaner.

Remove the breather hose from the carb.

Key on, gas on, 3/4 throttle, hit the starter button and spray starting fluid in the carb throat.

  • Purchased a Thysexton spark gap tool and I'm not getting spark to jump at 20kv. Not even 10kv.

  • Seems like a new coil is in order.

  • New plugs properly gapped, breather pipe off, 3/4 throttle, cranks well but no fire.

  • Lots of folks have problems with the new aftermarket carburetors. Did you try spraying starting fluid into it? Best to have somebody rebuild your original carb. You say you have spark is it a nice white hot spark?
