  • Parts catalog errors....
  • I have been going though my parts manuals doing some research and keep finding errors. Not just the magnetic pulley. Did you know 8N's had a tachometer?

Somebody went through the trouble to split the binding open and glue in a corrected page 131. They did a darn good job of it too, lined up perfect. But while they were in there they should have removed the page 131 that had the error. Anybody else have this in their May 1950 Parts Catalog?

  • Yes, my May, 1950 MPC has two page 131's -the original and the newer insert. The index in the front has the Chapter TACHOMETER stamped over in red ink with 'PROOFMETER'. The TACHOMETER page lists p/n 8N-17366, shaft, twice. Yours, too? This is the best 8N MPC as it contains all the changes that were being made beginning in early 1949. By April, 1950, at or around s/n 263844, the side mount was introduced, the proofmeter, the new 20A generator, new governor, and lotsa other stuff.

  • Having spent several years writing and proofing automatic transmision service manuals for GMs Hydra_Matic Division, I can tell you that even with all of the electronics an proof reading that we did, "stuff" still got through and into print. Sometimes a dealer bulletin had to be published to correct or "update" information.
Just thinking about the lack of computers and all of the manual inputs and reviewing required for manuals 60, 70, 80 years ago, boggles my mind.
As for the proof meter/tachometer/speedometer: it is all of them. Hours of operation at a given rpm, engine rpm at throttle setting for PTO, ground speed based on gear choice and engine rpm. Whatever your need to know. It could also be called a Hobbs meter as in an aircraft. I thought it was quite ingenious for the time.

  • Proof-Meter was the Ford Tractor trade name for a tachometer. Magnetic pulley is a misnomer for magneto pulley. Proof-Meters were heavily promoted and extremely popular on release. Ford Tractor immediately issued an update kit and even compensated distributors and/or dealers for installation. Ferguson was the distributor in Michigan and they installed the kits on all non-PM tractors they had prior to shipping. Lots of errors in Ford Tractor literature. Too much corporate bureaucracy interference and delay being the main cause.

  • It could also be considered a hour meter.

  • My 1950 parts catalog shows both.

  • According to John Smith's site, 1950 models after serial number 290271 had tachs. The Lincoln dealer in Lincoln, Nebraska has one setting on his show floor. (Did in 2008)

  • You got me curious now. I wonder if that is an actual Ford tachometer at the dealership? Only reference I can find in any of my books say 8N-17360-A1 is proofmeter - miles and 8N-17360-B proofmeter - kilometers. The proofmeter and tach carry the same part number. Confusing.

  • All proofmeters are tachometers but not all tachometers are proofmeters.
    50 -52 8N's and Jubilees/NAA's all have proofmeters.

  • I overlooked you wrote tachometer! Consider them one and the same so did not catch that.
