  • 8n side mount spark plug wire order
  • Does anyone have a diagram that shows the correct spark plug wire distributor cap order for a 6volt side mount 8n? Neither my cap or wires have numbers so they must not be original.

  • The number one on the cap almost lines up with the number one cylinder. If you draw a line from the center of distributor to number one cylinder.

  • Figuring out which distributor terminal is No.1 is not difficult. Remove spark plug on the front No.1 cylinder. Crank engine until you feel compression on No.1. Go around a few times until you can stop the engine just as the air stops coming out of that cylinder. If you are a perfectionist, a piece of wire can be bent and put in the cylinder to exactly find top dead center, but just sensing when the compression stroke is done is good enough. Remove distributor cap and the rotor will be pointing at the No.1 wire terminal location.

Any time the distributor is removed from the engine it should be reinstalled so the position of the No.1 cylinder is in the same place, but some mechanics just drop the distributor in the hole and figure out which terminal is No.1 later.

While the distributor cap is off, crank engine a bit to see which way the rotor turns. This will show which direction the rest of the wires go so they fire cylinder 1,2,4,3.

  • The firing order on all Ford Tractors is 1, 2, 4, 3 regardless if front mount or angle mount distributor, with #1cylinder at the front most of engine nearest the radiator. As stated, you must set the timing first. Get out your original Operator's Manual or I&T FO-4 Manual and follow the timing procedure as outlined in them. 8N timing on a side mount is 4 BTDC and the NAA and the 600 Series is 8 BTDC, and the 800 Series is 5 BTDC. Here's the page from the 600/800 Manual but procedure is the same on all.

  • You asked about "order" & Jack & I gave good info, but................the starting point for #1 is a whole 'nother matter. It can be any one of four positions. You must find where #1 TDC-compression is in order to ID the #1 tower on the cap.

  • JMOR'S wiring diagrams show them pretty well. Scroll down to the later 8N's
