That depends on which flathead engine you are using. The correct manual transmission V8 flywheel and ring gear must be used so the starter will engage the ring gear.
The early flathead engines have an integral clutch housing cast as part of the block. With that engine you may be able to use the flathead pressure plate. Make sure to check that the clutch disk splines will fit on the tractor transmission input shaft, or you may be able to just use a tractor clutch disc (see additional note about that below).
The late flathead engine does not have an integral clutch housing. The engine flange is 1-1/2" shorter than the 4 cylinder tractor engine, so the engine adapter plate should be exactly 1-1/2" thick. The V8 pressure plate assembly for my engine would not fit in the tractor clutch housing. I drilled and tapped another set of holes in the V8 flywheel to accept the smaller 8N tractor pressure plate assembly.
Clutch disk thickness must be correct for the pressure plate being used. I have a small collection of clutch disks and pressure plates that all came out of these tractors. Some of my clutch disks are very different thickness. On the first whack when I put my engine and transmission together, the clutch would not release. After much head scratching, I split the tractor again and put the correct clutch disk in there.
