  • Rear Axle Nut
  • My left rear tire ('49 8N) was leaking so I removed the tire and took it in for repair. Earlier in the year I'd noticed that a small gear oil leak had started from that hub, and I had thought it might be that the seal needed changing. But when I went to check that out I noticed that the big nut on the end of the axle was actually loose (with no retaining clip in sight! And, yes, I'm glad the wheel didn't fall off.)

At this point, should I just tighten the nut to the recommended 400 ft/lbs, install a new clip, and see if that takes care of the leak? Or might the loose nut have led to another problem that I'm not anticipating? When I had the tractor up on blocks the wheel didn't seem loose, though I wasn't looking for a problem at that point.

    Thanks for any advice.

  • the seal is to the outer hub surface. I t can leak there. There isn't much that you can really call a seal between axle splines & hub splines. There is a big rubber band around axle just behind the hub, but......? I apply liberal silicone to splines before installing hub & hope for no leaks. Helps to not overfill.

  • My limited experience! I had a leak similar to that and found the nut was loose by a turn and a bit. I retightened it and the leak stopped. For now I would do the simple and obvious thing first to see if that would fix it. Dave
