  • I have a 48 8n, had an issue with the 1st and 2nd cylinders not firing. did a complete tune up. Even changed out the coil, plugs, ignition switch, ran new wire from the resistor to the coil. Still only firing on cylinders 3 and 4. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Where are you in MO? I am just south of Pacific. Give me a shout if you are near and I can help. Last count I had 7 of those front mount Ns.

  • Have you checked for spark at those two plugs? Also how is the compression in those cylinders?

  • Check point gap on all four lobes of the cam, not just one.

  • Condenser will cause no fire on two plugs. Bad dist shaft wobble can do the same.
    Worn lobes? Crossed wires?

  • Re: No Spark
  • So a condenser acts differently two out of four times??? And it even does it repetitively on the exact same pair of cylinders?.????

  • JMOR, we had this conversation a few months ago. You forgot your own answer.
That's OK. I am right behind you.
    whut?

  • Checked the shaft, no wobble there. Just put a new condenser in but it could be bad I suppose. Will check the wiring also(just my luck). Thanks Bruce!

  • NAPA use to carry good parts; blue steak points. I was replacing the points in the Old Girl once a year until I switched to the blue steak points.

  • Well, checked gap on all 4 lobes,.015 all the way around. Bought another new set of points and condenser. New coil replaced everything except the resistor and volt gauge. New plugs, wires, not crossed. No fire anywhere. Just about at my wits end.

  • Did you make sure to turn the switch on? I forget to do that sometimes. Also, could be a bad switch. However, you went from spark on two to no spark at all; that is significant. Also, yes, remove the ground wire from battery to where it is bolted, make sure a good ground and bolt back. You can check coil on bench for spark. A condenser is a capacitor, that can be checked with an ohmmeter for short or open. Also, I check for points opening and closing with the distributor off; use an ohmmeter; one probe grounded to the body, then other on the point side that is not to ground, rotate shaft. If you have a beep setting then set it to that, beep, beep, beep as you rotate the shaft. You can check the resistor by ohmmeter. We have to do this scientifically instead of guessing.

  • Re: No Spark
  • Is that correct that you went from firing on 2 cylinders to firing on mone?

  • As strange as it sounds! That's why I think it could be a grounding issue.

  • I have to have to be grounded someplace. Will check that next.
