  • The answer is yes you can. Is it worth the trouble IMO no. Here is my '47 8n with side mount conversion. Also 12 volt conversion. Not many have done it and most people don't know what goes into it but Deanostoybox described it very well. It's too much work for little gain. I have side mount block with front cover and dizzy if you want to put a side mount together emails open.

  • Swap out the engine with a later 8N engine.

  • It would be much easier and cheaper to sell it and buy a late 8N.

  • You can. You need to replace the camshaft with the later one that had the distributor drive gear on it. Also the cam timing gear with one that matches the camshaft. Then the front cover will have to be changed also. Then you will be able to install a side mount distributor.

But wait, that is not all.

Now you will find the generator interferes with the distributor. So the generator will have to be moved to the other side. Some type of bracket will have to be fabricated as there are no mounting holes in the block. The oil fill tube will need to be modified in some way as it is in the same place as the generator now. If you have an alternator you may not need to relocate the oil filter, with a generator you will for sure. You will have to be creative finding a place to mount the coil as the head does not have the mounting holes like a factory side mount engine does, but if you get that far that is trivial.

Probably there are some other issues I did not think of:-)

There is no kit as far as I know, at least I never heard of one.
