  • Zane's Jig
  • Is it possible to adjust the draft control without Zane's jig? $60.00 would hurt the wallet a bit. However, I do want to do this right.

  • This thread may be of some help. It has links to reproductions of the instructions for the Zane jig and the carpenter square method, as well as measurements of Zane's jig if you want to make your own.

Somewhere at one time I had read there is a mark on some 8n top covers. Turns out mine has it. It saves the trouble of measuring if you use the carpenter square method. The mark is a circle stamped into the gasket surface on both sides where the ball at the end of the control arm is supposed to be when making the adjustments. The circle is the same size as the ball. If you are lucky and have those marks then easy peasy:-)

  • Circle Mark - Is this the one?
  • I found this mark near the control lever. Is this the mark you meant and if so, how do I use it?

  • Re: Circle Mark - Is this the one?
  • doesn't look like it. ones I'm talking about would be inline with the bot holes, about 1/4" in diameter, and no marks inside.

from the file "Lift No Jig Adjustments.pdf" in the section "Control Arm Adjustment":

    (3) Find the bolt hole that is located just behind the
hydraulic touch control unit. Measure 1.7 - 1.75 inches
forward from the front edge of this bolt hole. Make a
mark on the mounting flange at this location

That is where it would be. If not there you don't have them. Some do, some don't.
If the mark were there you would not need to make that measurement:-)

  • Re: Circle Mark - Is this the one?
  • I looked at the "Lift No Jig" pdf again and it said to measure 1.7 to 1.75 from the bolt hole edge. Using a scale, it appeared that 1.75 was between the two smaller circles you see inside of the larger circle. I think that is the mark but it got stamped too far out.

  • Re: Circle Mark - Is this the one?
  • I would not count on it. The mark is too big and has the small marks inside it. I would just make a mark across the mounting flange in line with the bolt holes and be done with it. Like the white line in the picture in the PDF.

  • Re: Zane's Jig
  • It was done for decades without it. If one really understands how the system works, the Ford manuals are perfectly good at adjusting. The 'jig" makes it easier for those without that understanding. The 'jig' really amounts to nothing more than a carpenters square & a ruler, not to take anything away from Zane, but just the facts.
