  • Back Again
  • Hello to everyone. Have not been on here for some time. We are "just starting" to thaw out a bit in Montana, after a very cold, and heavy snow winter. So, going out in the next couple of weeks and get he old 52' started. Grandson and I have a bet on how long it will take to get it started? I am betting, first second it turns over. Been over a year since started, and it sits outside.

    Hope everyone is doing great,
    Jim

  • HiYa Jim-
Check the battery first. If you didn't have it on a float charger, chances are it maybe dead. Gas will be old but worry about that once you get it running. Check hydraulic oil and engine oil for water contamination too. My 8N sat for over a year and started right up with old gas in it. I had the battery on a Battery Tender Jr. all the time too. After starting and running for while, I did add fresh gas.

  • Welcome Back!
My tractors are parked under a roof and they get some use all year. The longest any of them might sit is a few weeks. We also don't get anything like the extended bitter cold you get in Montana. My problem child is the lawnmower. Every spring I look at it and wonder if it will start. Battery Tenders prevent most of the dead battery issues that I used to have to deal with before it would even crank. This year it surprised me and started almost before I got the key fully turned. The grass is just getting started, so mostly I was just trimming clumps of wild onions and blowing the leaves that didn't fall until the new growth pushed them off.

  • Thanks,
I have left my 8n at it's original 6 Volt, Positive ground. Mostly, because it works great that way.
What has amazed me, and grand son, is the old battery. I put a new one in about six years ago, and it has managed to keep going perfectly.

This winter, we had some extreme cold weather. Here in Helena/Montana City, we had a lovely "Minus 38" one morning, and several weeks of Never seeing a + plus sign.
I am betting that old battery will still fire up the old N.

I just read where the "Grizzly's" are awake in Glacier National Park, and I am sure very, very hungry. Believe I will stay out of the woods for awhile.

  • My 2N has been setting shedded but has not been started since early last fall. 6 volt also.

It will start! I actually have no qualms about it. Has been that way for the 20 years I've owned it. Not sure how old the battery is but do remember changing it once.

If it will not start I will post it!

SE Iowa and we do not get -38! I have seen -20 but that has been years.

  • Did it start?

My 2N did not start on the first or second revolution! Seems you have to remember to turn the key on! Strange!

  • This winter here in Montana has been brutal. However, starting to warm up now. Article in the paper mentioned the "Griz is Awake".. So if the bears are up and hungry, it must finally be spring.
I will post after we try to the N started... I have faith.
