  • Hard to turn over
  • I have a 49 8n, 6V. I have never had any trouble starting it until a few days ago. I had just driven it a few days before. It had seamed kind of sluggish on the start. I was thinking battery. I have not replaced the battery and I have had it for about 6 years. The starter ran down to a stop I pulled the battery ant took it to the garage. The tractor sets in a tent shed, that is just about as far as I want to carry a battery. Hooked it up and it looked good. let it charge a bit, then put it back in. Cleaned and shined every thing in the prosses. It still would not turn over. I brought the truck down and jumped the starter with 12V nothing. Something is wrong. If I turn the motor with the belt I get a tight spot, then it will roil slowly to the next tight spot. Took plugs out, they are dry. It turns over a little better with all the plugs out, but not near what it should with the 12V. No water pumping out of the plug holes. Thanks for you help and thoughts.

  • Bruce said it best, probably a weak battery. However, ALWAYS check the connections of cables to block, etc. Take them off, and sand/scrape to bright metal all the connections including the positive ground. That has been the cause on millions of not start issues.
    Just saying,,,,

  • Thank you all for replying.
I was pretty sure the old battery was done for. The bad jumper cables, and, or, bad connections is wat confused me. I thought it would just turn a million miles an hour, and when it didn't I thought I blew it up setting in the shed. It started and is running. I will get a new battery after the holyday.

  • Great, always nice when it is not something serious. Do you have a Rural King nearby, they have cheap batteries with a two year warranty; one year free replacement, second year prorated.

  • That seems to describe a battery that has reached end-of-life and may have killed the starter on it's way down. There are a lot of variables that could cause it to crank slow when running the starter with jumper cables. Length and size of cables is just one of them. I'd have the battery checked and plan on buying a new one. If it still won't crank well, have the starter checked. If it's a long drive to town, pull the starter and make one trip.

  • Why not just check the obvious?

The battery is 6 years old.

What is the voltage reading? Got a hydrometer? It's probably got a dead cell.
