  • OK, I got the trumpet off and it was very heavy. I wasn't expecting it to be as heavy as it was. The differential isn't exactly light either.

I have not gone into the differential but did notice one of the rollers on the outer bearing got hit by the broken pin from the spider ring or something got it. I looked at the race in the trumpet and except for a slight area around the very edge, it looked OK.

  • I have a friend in NJ. This would be really great. I would hug you if you were here. My friend lives in Wyane, NJ. I will call him. He was planning a trip down here and this would work out great. Thank you so much.

  • Yikes!! That is major damage. Not going to fix that with a welder. Time to hit the bone yards for replacement parts. Unfortunately metal fatigue failures in critical components is one of the risks of dealing with 70 year old machinery. I know that doesn't ease the pain but the good news is salvage parts are readily available. Shipping on the heavy stuff is going to be the primary stumbling block.

  • OK - if you are anywhere close to Shelby Just8N's would be a likely source of used parts. If not plenty of N series tractors in that area so you should be able to find good used parts within driving distance. Good luck and keep your chin up. Lots of folks here rooting for you.

  • I thought about taking the other trumpet off and taking it a welding shop for repair. I may have found one, it is in Wisconsin. The guy said he could see about having it shipped through Fasternal; I have had things shipped through them before, they will ship from shop to shop and you pick up at your local Fasternal.

  • The broken casting at the pinion gear looks like a big deal. That is where I'd start looking for a complete replacement rear diff/axle assembly, rather than try to fix all the things that got whacked by loose parts. The best way to go about that would be a donor non-running tractor.

  • There is no money for this. I make enough to pay the bills and that is it. I will look at the differential and put the thing together and use it. I don't know when this happened. I haven't tried pulling stumps or anything like that. I have used it to plough the gardens and haul wood.

  • New bearing (inexpensive) fixes that. Replace bearing and race. So far so good. Yeah, we are talking significant iron and weight.....
