  • Old Girl's Wheels Need Some Paint
  • As you can see in the photo, the Old Girl's wheels could do with some paint on the inside. The other wheel is just as bad. I took the wire wheel to it but I think I will need to try the little hand held sandblaster I have on them.

My question is about the paint. I have a 10% coupon from TSC that I am going to use to buy the UTF. I was in the shop and noticed they have two paints that list a Ford Grey and a Ford light Gray; the caps on the rattle cans looked the same as far as the colour of the caps. One is Rustoleum (Ford Grey) and the other is Majic (Ford Light Grey). I did some searches and some said they thought the Majic tended to fade; lack of UV stuff in the paint perhaps? The Majic is cheaper priced.

Now TSC has the paint in rattle can, quart, and gallon. My question is if anyone has used the Rustoleum Ford Gray paint and how close does it match to the original colour on an 8N? Has anyone used the TSC Majic Ford Light Grey paint? The reason I ask is that if I buy a gallon I can have the paint for the hood and fenders as well as the outside of the wheels; all which need painting as well. If the colour is too far off, then I might just get some paint for the inside of the wheels and wait on the other since you don't see the inside of the wheels that easily with the fenders in place.

  • A gallon is plenty to do all the sheet metal and wheel center discs. If you are going to do your own spraying, two or three quarts actually may be enough and a lot cheaper than buying a gross of rattle cans. I take all my sheet metal to a local bump shop and they will do them for a decent fee. I supply the paint, thinner, donuts, and pizza. Wheel center discs are painted gray. Wheel rims are painted silver argent wheel paint. Your tractor paint it "Any Colour You Like" (a great Pink Floyd tune).

  • JUST8NS and CARPENTER sell TISCO brand paint. I buy my TISCO paint locally at the KUBOTA/boneyard dealer 8 miles south, or the new part/used equipment dealer 15 miles away to the east. Also the JD dealer sells it and the lawnmower repair guy, both north of town has it. Here are the TISCO paints I use:

    FORD DARK GRAY - TP-2888 .... all 9N and 2N tractors.
    FORD MED GRAY - TP-240 ...... all 8N and up to 1962.
IHC RED - TP -110 ........... all Ford 8N and up til 1962. OEM Ford Vermillion match.
    CNH/IRONGARD - M1J-957-SE5DS all Ford 8N and up til 1962.

  • Many posts exist on paints are archived. In my opinion, I'd avoid the TSC MAJIC brand altogether. I suggest using TISCO or Rustoleum if you are on a budget and just want a cosmetically good looking tractor and not doing a full restoration. The CNH paint is good for this too. I'm not sure if VALSPAR still supplies the Case/New Holland paints or not.

  • The fenders have rust holes in them; they are repairable by a good body shop but that will be another time; I have seen fenders for sale on fleabay in a whole lot worst condition. I just want something close to match that will look better and keep down additional rust. If I win the lottery; which I never play, I will look at restoring the tractor. My brother-in-law painted his 8N a cream colour; I think he had the paint on hand so used it. I want something a little bit closer to Ford Grey than cream. Who sales TISCO that I might could find locally? I tried doing a search but came up empty.

  • I had a wheel which needed painting on my 2N. Used the Rustoleum and it's not offensively different. Not an exact match but does not hit you with it's mismatch.
