  • Setting Differential Bearing Preload on 9N
  • I'm replacing the right side axle trumpet on my 9N. The old gasket between the trumpet and the differential housing measures 0.014" thick. It's in good shape and I could either use it again or use new gaskets, which are 0.008" thick, so 2 would stack to 0.016" and I presume squish down a bit. I can't figure any way to measure the amount of preload on the bearing. What's the normal procedure?

  • I would go with the original gasket. FO-4 calls out the correct procedure for differential bearing setting.

What JMOR is saying is for the axle bearings, not the differential bearings.

  • I found an online copy of FO-4 but only see the procedure for axle bearings not differential bearings.

  • Never mind found it, use "standard" gasket as you said.

  • Every N-Owner needs to at least have these two manuals in their shop:

    I&T FO-4 MANUAL:

    >/center>

FORD MASTER PARTS CATALOG, 1939 THRU 1953:

FORD 9N/2N TRACTOR ESSENTIAL OWNER/OPERATOR/PARTS/SERVCE MANUALS:

FORD 8N TRACTOR ESSENTIAL OWNER/OPERATOR/PARTS/SERVCE MANUALS:

You can order new copies online at www.just8ns.com

  • Oh yeah, I have a IT Ford manual lying around somewhere. Can't find it at the moment, Plus I'm hoping to be a former N-Owner fairly soon ;-)

  • I&T Shop Service manual, available at most tractor supply outfits, both local and on line.

  • Correct! I should do better at reading. As you told him and as the manual says, just use the "standard gasket". What's a couple of thou among friends and 70 year old tractors. :)

  • The FO-4 is the service manual for your tractor and you really should have a copy before tearing into it.

  • It is not "pre-load". They are set up with 'slack'. Jack up both rear tires free of ground. Take out shims/gaskets until when you turn one tire, the other one turns same direction (the inner ends of axles are binding now). Now remove one shim/gasket at a time until the other tire rotates opposite direction to the one you are turning (now ends of axles are not binding, by just a few thousandths). Apply sealer and button it up.

And I know you meant,Now (ADD) one shim/gasket at a time until the other tire rotates opposite direction to the one you are turning (now ends of axles are not binding, by just a few thousandths). Apply sealer and button it up.
