  • Finally fixed ignition / switch problem
  • I have been having starting problems with my 8n along with missing under load. Replacing the points, condenser, plugs, coil, rotor, cap, and rebuilding the carburetor did not help. At the latest refusal to start I checked the voltages and had 2 volts at the coil, 5 after the ignition switch, and 6.25 at the battery. Replacing the ignition switch seems to have solved the problem. I have had ignition switches not make contact before but this time it is high resistance.

  • That is one of the reasons years ago they went from 6 volts to 12. 6 volts will start right up every time if everything is perfect. When I had my 6volt 8N I cleaned all the electrical contacts every fall. It started up every even in the dead of winter. 12 vehicles still need to have good contacts but it isn't quite as critical.

  • The switches are not sealed and replacements seem to be made cheaper every year. They do get crudded-up inside and cause problems, especially with a 6 volt system. My 8N now has a sealed marine-grade toggle switch for the ignition. No need for a key to run that one. The 2N has a "just like original" ignition switch from Dennis Carpenter that appeared to be made much better than the one it replaced.
