  • 1948 was the year engine block was cast. You can further ID it by the casting date code on a boss tag attached to the starter pocket when cast. That would be specific to the date cast, NOT the date the tractor was built. For that add roughly 30 days. For example 'B248' would be February 2, 1948. Realize serial numbers don't mean a whole lot though. Engines were often swapped out. You might have the s/n *8N-12214* engine replaced in a 9N or 2N tractor. Other defining factors need to be looked at. 1948 8N criteria would be: 4 Speed Transmission; Position Control: early steering box; no script fenders; front mount distributor; and a 6V 3-wire/3-brush generator on RH side; to name most. The aluminum hydraulic pump cover will have a date code as well.

  • Got a question for you Tim, and whomever else that might have some input. I am now in control of my dad's 8-N Ford tractor, have been ever since he passed away 4 years ago. It has a Funk conversion kit (to a 6 cylinder). I am gradually trying to learn all I can. Currently, it has several repairs that are needed.

Question: Since it has the Funk conversion, I'm assuming the serial number on the Funk engine isn't going to tell me anything about when the tractor was made. So I'd like some input on how I might can identify the year model of the tractor, and maybe even the year model/make of the Funk conversion kit.

    Thanks in advance.

  • HiYa Dean-
I'm not the knowledgeable on the FUNKS but here is a LINK from our MANUALS library of the FUNK 6-CYL with some details that may help you. The 8N Model was built from July, 1947 til September, 1952 so yours would be in that range. There are a few FUNK owners here that would be able to help you out further so try starting a new thread with just the subject 'FUNK 6-CYL INFO RQD' or something to that effect. They most likely won't see this post buried within another topic.

  • This link may help you. There are sometimes date codes on various parts of the tractor. Usually they can be found on the forward facing surface of the rear axle housings and on the bottom of the hydraulic pump next to the drain plug. I have also seen date codes on transmission casings but not always.

  • Thank you Jim. I do see two more numbers, one on the rear end, and another on one of the hydraulic arms on the rear. Thanks for that link.

  • Some of those numbers will be part numbers and not date codes. Best thing would be to post pics of the numbers you find and let the guys here decipher them for you.
