  • 9N Axle won't go all the way in
  • My Axle seems to be bottoming out with 1/4 of space between the outer axle tube flange and the backing plate. I can feel it slide into the splines in the diff and can feel the diff rotating when I turn the hub but I can't get it to close the gap. I've tapped it with a sledge hammer and put some clamps on it to draw it in but no go. Do I need to put more pressure on it to shove the diff back to the other side more? Don't want to force anything.

  • Lift the axle up above where is needs to be when sliding it in. The bearing could be hitting the inner race. It is about 1/4 inch from from fully seated when it is hits the race vs centered. Do not try to tighen the stud nuts to close the gap.

  • Sounds like it is hitting the other axle shaft. My first thought is, is a part missing when you assembled the brake and bearing or is it mis-assembled?

  • It turns out it was hitting the other axle shaft which had pushed in when this one was removed, which took the preload off the bearing. I jacked up the other side so the wheel was off the ground then slowly used two bolts to pull the axle in which pushed the other axle back into place and preloaded both bearings. The wheels are now starting to turn in the same direction when rotated so I think I'll add a shim/gasket to take a bit of the preload off which should allow the wheels to turn in opposite directions.
