  • Can you measure right at the starter terminal on the solenoid?

That is a lot of voltage to be dropping across the solenoid and should burn it up pretty soon.

  • .4 volt is a bit on the high side. Closer to zero is better and .2 is acceptable.
Sounds like a dirty ground. I just went through the grounds on my truck and wound up taking them all off, taking a brush to them and a dab of contact grease and reassemble. Amazing how much errant voltage went away.
Your description is lacking a bit of info for me. Others might be able to decipher what you mean, but I am a bit lost.
Is the starter making any noise at all?
    12V conversion with a starter relay/solenoid?
Is that a 4 post with the resistor bypass?
Do the cables get warm when trying to crank?

  • Bruce,

I'm not understanding your answer to Thad and he has not answered my question. In my experience the voltage applied to the starter is and should be close to the battery voltage given some losses along the way.

His problem (in no order and in my understanding) appear to be:

    Wiring error
    Defective solenoid
Defective cable (Unless the solenoid is mounted on the starter)
Shorted starter (Terminal shorted to case?)

  • It is 3 post relay starter is not making any noise at all the .4 volts is where the copper strip mounts to the starter

  • With the tractor out of gear ground the small terminal and see what happens. If you have it in gear and are standing in front of the tire, you may get run over. It almost sounds like the switch is not working or you have a bad solenoid right out of the box. It happens!
