  • Clutch sticking and releasing seconds after clutch depressed
  • I have read what I can find in the archives. I started to notice my clutch sticking so I got in the habit of blocking the pedal down after every use. I now am noting a one or two second hesitation for it to release after the pedal is depressed. I read that this is scary and can be dangerous. My question is this........ is there a fix for this without breaking the tractor? Dave

  • If 8n you could pop the steering box and give a good shot of BP Blaster. Not a fix but you can try slipping the clutch while driving every now and then.

  • As you're aware, the clutch/flywheel is in what might be called a DRY BAY... any engine or transmission oil in the area is due to LEAKAGE. Most sticky clutches are due to leakage/contamination.

Splitting the tractor is not a big deal... several members have their own favorite way to do this. But this is a good time to evaluate the flywheel starter gear and replace the transmission forward seal.

If the contamination is from the Engine Oil, it won't get better by itself...and Bandaid fixes aren't much use.

Fear not, if you can run wrenches and sockets, you'll get all the help you need here.

  • In this case, what difference does it make where the distributor is?

  • Telling him to spray the clutch down with break cleaner through the timing hole wouldn't be much help if he has a front distributor.

  • True, but you could have just said that in the first place.

  • That is treating the symptoms, not curing the disease... sounds like a DOCTOR... LOL

  • Thanks guys for all the good ideas. It is a late model 8N side distributor so I will try spraying through the timing port. I am in the middle of doing some work and do not want to take it out of service right now. It runs great and does everything I ask except for this fly in the ointment. I will report back with my results.
