  • Ford 950 80726 Positive Ground?
  • HI
    GREAT FORUM....Thank you
    Question:
    Ford 900 Row Crop
    950 80726
    Is it Positive Ground?
    No Battery
Purchased 6 Volt Battery, but old owner put new Cables
    RED - Stater Solenoid
    Black to Ground
Did not want to connect, as I know older Fords were Positive Ground
Also, this Tractor has the TSX765 Carburetor
    Is that correct?
    THANK YOU

  • The TSX-765 is for a 600 series engine. Was your engine swapped out or the carb? The original 951 engine would have had the TSX-706 carb. Big question does the tractor have a generator or was it converted to an alternator as most of them are 12V Neg ground.

  • THANK YOU
As far as I know everything is stock including the engine, and now the Carburetor
Not really sure how to I.D. the engine size
Has a Generator and was told it is 6 Volts
    Somebody put Battery Cables on
    RED for Positive
    BLACK for Negative
TSX 765 Carb was rebuilt but is all gummed up from sitting for a couple of years and whoever rebuilt used a lot of RTV.
Is there another Carb other than the Marvel-Schebler TSX-593 or TSX-706 that I can use??
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all the info.....

  • HiYa Glen-
Welcome aboard, matey! ALL FORD Tractors were 6V/POS GRN until the diesel series and Thousand Series. Your tractor has the 172 CID Red Tiger Engine. We cannot tell you if it is still 6V or switched over to a 12V job. Does it gave a generator and Voltage Regulator on it or just an alternator? However, having just a 6V or a 12V battery does nor designate it as a 6V or as a 12V system -there's other things that have to be changed as well, BUT, some guys slap 12V batteries on their machines and make no other changes, and call it a 12V system. A 6V battery requires thicker 00 gauge battery cables to operate effectively. If you have thin car-like battery cables, and a 6V battery, it's no good. Next, starters don't care if 6V or 12V and the starter motor has nothing to do with whether it's 6V or 12V. What is "RED Starter Solenoid"??? What is "Black to Ground"??? Colors don't conduct electrons. You need the essential manuals to identify important systems like the electrical. We have some in our MANUALS forum at the top of the red menu bar. The 800 tractor Model is similar. The TSX-765 Carburetor was made for the 600 & 700 which had the smaller Red Tiger engines at 134 CID. The 900 Series Tractor should have the Marvel-Schebler TSX-593 or TSX-706 carb on it, made more robust for the larger Red Tiger 172 CID engine. Leave it for now and concentrate on the electrical system first. Once that is straight and it runs, leave it alone. OEM M/S TSX-706 and a few others are getting hard to find. Read your manuals first before you do damage to the machine or yourself. Get a copy of the Clymer I&T F0-20 manual to start with.

  • Here's a peek at the Ford 600/800 OEM Operator's Manual with the electrical diagram. ALL Hundred Series models were the same except the diesels. I'll say it again, the best thing you can do right now is invest in the essential manuals if you want to be a Ford tractor owner.

  • OK, Glen. You have a 6V battery. Now to ensure you want to finish it as OEM with the POSITIVE GROUND set up, first get the right battery cables. The LINK below is for the OEM style Ford Tractor ground strap used from 48-64. It is a HD flat, braided, strap 11" long and is correct for all models from 1948 thru 1964. Many of is use JUST8NS or DENNIS CARPENTER for the correct parts. By your comment the you have RED to positive and BLACK to ground on the battery cables doesn't mean you have the correct 6V set up and possibly means you have the smaller gauge 12V battery cables. 6V requires 00 gauge on the NEG (-)bat post to the starter solenoid, the braided ground strap connects the POS (+)bat terminal to an iron casting or the steel metal frame. BUT, that still doesn't complete the 6V/POS GRN set up. The generator is wired to a 3-wire/2-Brush unit which then connects to a 3-wire tab [ARM BAT FLD] Voltage Regulator. It is imperative that you have the wiring all correct BEFORE you fire up the system. That's where your F0-20 Manual comes in so you can see and identify the schematic and wire it correctly. If you get the ARMATURE BATTERY and FIELD connections mixed up, you will smoke the VR. I will rebuild your carb and exchange it for the correct TSX-706 or 593 carb. My email is open.

  • Hook it up positive ground and polarize it before you start it up. See tip # 23.
