  • Ford 600 tank shut off
  • Hi,
I have a 1955 620 which at some point had three pt hitch, hydraulics etc added. Under gas tank it has a fuel shut off valve that is operated with a large flat blade screwdriver.
My question(s): is this original equipment?
Should I shut this off when not using tractor or the valve on the sediment screen?

The guy I bought it from was shutting off the valve under the tank with a scredriver. Somewhat difficult (and you need a screwdriver).
    Many Thanks!!

  • Use jb weld or other epoxy to attach a 1/4" or 5/16" flat washer in the screw slot.
Only very "nosey" people will see it!

  • This is from the OEM Ford 600/800 Tractor Owner's Manual. Don't have one? I suggest you get a copy as well as a copy of the CLYMER I&T F0-20 Manual. The new aftermarket valves are all prone to leaking. Dennis Carpenter Reproductions is busy trying to rectify that situation.

  • I have found that the replacement tend to leak after a year or two no matter who you buy them from. If replacing tank will I go with an NAA tank. It has the old style sediment bowl style. If replacing the valve I leave it on all the time and put in another shut off valve inline where it a little easier to access rather then under the hood. I'll also reroute gas line around the front of engine. I never liked fords idea of running the line inbetween the exhaust manifold. If yours does leak then you may not want to mess with it. But sooner or later it will. BTW you can change them out without having to take the tank off but in ain't EZ.

  • Several years ago I purchased a replacement for my 860. It was worse than the original! So I rebuilt the original and have had no trouble since.

I carry an old screwdriver in the tool box for the purpose.

"Should I shut this off when not using tractor or the valve on the sediment screen?"

Highly recommended. This is a gravity feed fuel system, if you float needle valve fails in the carb you will flood the carb and possible the engine. Lots of posts on this topic. I can turn that valve by hand on my 641.
