  • 8N Rear Axle Seals
  • Hello, I am working on putting the rear axle back together on a 1952 8N with inner and outer seals. Looking at the manuals and all the websites for parts, the diagram for the rear axle assembly shows outer seal D5NN4115A in two locations. In the exploded view the first is in part of the seal retainer that bolts on outside the brake shoe assembly. This makes sense. This same seal is also shown between the brake shoe assembly and the axle bearing retainer. This second one doesn't seem like it would actually fit in the retainer and appears to me to be a typo (I don't see this seal in the axle bearing retainer on my tractor, but I got the tractor disassembled). If it were correct, this parts diagram would then list three seals, the outer in the seal retainer, the inner in axle housing (I see where this goes as well on my tractor), and this third one described above between the brake assembly and the axle bearing retainer. Hoping someone can clear up this confusion.

  • Awesome, thanks guys! I think after reading the responses (and having read John Smith's write up before), I am convinced on the two seal arrangement I have, especially with JMOR's comments that there have been different assembly arrangements of the two seals depending on the year of manufacture. This also makes sense with the parts the last owner supplied. He did a great job with the rest of the mechanicals and said everything was complete to assemble the rear end. I had two non-Ford part number seals that match up with the inner seals so all looks correct. Thanks again! Great group here and was not expecting such fast and useful responses!

Depending on exactly when the tractor rolled down the assy line, the outer seal will be one of the two you reference, not both. The tractor will have different bearing retainers, depending on which outer seal is used.

  • Ken, as BlasterStumps mentions refer to John Smith's article regarding what's involved in replacing the rear axle on a 8N.

I recently replaced the bearings on '51. Followed John's well document article as reference of required parts & install notes. Great pictures to follow. John done nice work.

For the '50-'52 there are 2 seals (inner 8N4233A - fits into the axle trumpet) & the outer - A8NN4248A, built into the retainer/seal assembly). Plus 2 cork gaskets (8N4284 - fits over axle shaft between bearing & hub) & (8N4225 - sandwiched between the brake shoe plate & the seal retainer assembly).

As John mentions use a little RTV sealant on all mating surfaces to ensure a leak free install.

    Hope this helps.
