  • 8-N Funk Conversion starter help
  • The starter on my dad's 8-N Ford with 6-cylinder Funk Conversion has gone out, and the housing broke on it when removing the starter. The housing has broken before because there is an obvious welded bead from a previous break. Anyway, a local starter/alternator business (Texas) thought they could source the housing (from their large supply, or buy elsewhere), and then rebuild the starter. But, they ended up not being able to find a replacement housing for the starter, thus them rebuilding the starter is not an option.

I am aware of the place in Michigan that makes and sells new starters for 8-N Fords with the Funk Conversion. Have any of you had any experience with the place in Michigan? They appear to be the only place that sells a new starter such as this. Any other starter advice would be appreciated.

Somewhat related, next project is to replace the water pump. Any advice on the water pump would be appreciated also.

    Thank you.

  • Did anything go bad on the starter other then the broken nose piece? I would find a welding shop and have it welded back together. The nose was a custom Funk part so you won't easily find one, and used would be your only choice. The rest of the starter is 8N except for a slightly modified 8N armature and a different starter drive.

Have seen the Michigan starters but that's about all I know of them.

Water pump is pretty straight forward, nothing too special. I assume you have the flathead six, so you will need a water pump for a 1949 to 1951 Ford 226 CI pickup or truck engine. You may need to press the pulley off of the old and put on the new if the new is not the same.

  • Thanks to both of you for the feedback. Tim, yes on something else going bad on the starter. Some of the pinion teethe are dinged up/broken. Didn't sound right one day when starting it.

Thanks for the other info, that's good to know (on both starter and water pump).

  • that engine was from another Ford car or truck, so I suggest you research a bit & I don't think it is that rare.
