  • I couldn't get the 6 volt charging system working. After trips to the gen shop it was determined that the imported regulators from China was the problem !!The gen shop ordered me a US made regulator and the problem went away. Steiner could have saved me a lot of trouble and $ (repeated trips to the gen shop) Finally found a competent repair facility. Not many shops are versed on generators In hind site should have changed to alternator 12 volt but its working fine now

  • You're right about many alternator/starter shops not knowing anything about generators and the FORD 6V/POS GRN system. Many fellas can't figure them out so end up mucking up the setup. I always rebuild the OEM parts as they were designed to be rebuilt over and over. The NAA generator is a 20 AMP, 3-Wire/2-Brush, B-Circuit Design/ generator with a Voltage Regulator. There is a difference between the 'A' and the 'B' design units and polarizing each is different. This is where many units fail. Perhaps the biggest myth about these Ford N's is the charging system and out of frustration due to incorrect wiring and lack of knowing what is right and what isn't, the 'fix' is to try a 12V system, and even that is often done incorrectly. There's nothing wrong with a 12V switchover job, and certainly nothing wrong with the OEM 6V/POS GRN setup, but either way if it isn't all wired correctly, you will have problems. It is also important to have the correct fan belt and tension set to maintain the charging rate.
