Harry Ferguson and notes on the war effort
I guess Tim and I will have to agree to disagree re HF's nomenclature. But along the lines of the Steel and other material allocations it is interesting to note where these materials that in 1941 were going to all sorts of consumer and civilian needs went in just about 1-1/2 years from 1942-1943. In 1941 the automobile industry produced 3-1/2 million cars and trucks for private use. From January 1942 till the end of the war just 139 cars were produced for private use. In 1943 we had gone from 2,000 planes built in 1939 to 86,000 in 1943 alone. Also in 1943 we produced 45,000 tanks, 98,000 bazookas, a million miles of communications wire, 18,000 new ships and craft, 648,000 trucks, nearly 6 million rifles, 26,000 mortars and each and every day of 1943 munition plants spilled out 71 million rounds of small arms ammo. In 1944 we made even more of all these things.
Kind of gives some idea of the scale of that endeavor.
