When adjusting the brakes on Woewoe, The 1948 8N, I found the drums were not perfectly round. They are stamped, after all, not machined like automotive drums. The problem I incurred is that if the brakes are tightened up enough for a good pedal, ( mechanical brakes NEED to be tight to work proficiently) the brake would lock up at a certain point with the brake released. If the brake is loose enough not to lock up, you have a sloppy pedal that really only works when it hits the high point causing the wheel to skid. I work at O'Reiley's so I took my drums into the store and turned them. I had to remove between .050" and .060" to get them true but the resulting brake performance is amazing. I highly recommend this procedure.

  • The '51 had a similar issue. It's problem turned out to be a little slag on the hub, where the drum screws had been torched, not permitting the drum to seat squarely.

  • I can see that being a problem.
