  • In Need of head bolts
  • Had a head gasket give up and When I went to remove the head one of the bolts busted off...
I had to drill the remaining piece of bolt and tap the hole to insure threads are OK...
I`m ready to go back together with it now and cleaned up the remaining bolts only to find that the water jacket had rusted some of the ends of them bolts...
Some are suspect since they will not start in easily, so I wanna replace the set...
What I would like to do is use y`all for my source first, BUT I can get them from the dealer IF I need to...
I need at least three and would rather get a set IF available...
I don`t remember the fella I`ve been buying parts from here though...
Hopefully I can come up with these head bolts for my `49er...
Thanks Guys, and stay away from that virus,
    Dennis

  • Here you go -SEE LINK. OEM flathead spec is 7/16-14 Hex Head Bolt, 1-3/8" Long, 18 required. For a pack of 25 at $15 or so with shipping you probably won't find a better deal. I don't believe there are any blind holes on the block for the head but double check before inserting. These bolts are listed are 1-1/2" long so if needed dust down an 1/8" if needed. Hex bolts are spec'd at 65-70 ft/lbs. Ideally a Grade 6 (69 ft/lbs) or Grade 7 (71 ft/lbs) bolt would be ideal but not easy to find. A Grade 8 bolt is spec'd at 78 ft/lbs. Note chart as hex nuts used on studs are 7/16-20 and spec'd different. Also not torque sequence. Torque is properly applied in three steps at different settings, not all at once. OEM manuals show no washers are used too but I know some guys do.

  • Re: In Need of head bolts
  • Grade 5 is probably all you need but 8 is what most people use.
