  • How to shift back to neutral?
  • Hello. I just brought home a 1955 Ford 650 (5 speed). I am very excited. It is my first tractor and is in great shape. It is difficult for me to understand how to shift the gears though. When you’re in a gear and push the clutch down, how do you get it back to neutral? I had no problem moving it back-and-forth from one gear to another on a certain level (e.g., into reverse and 3rd on the “up” level), but when I wanted to drop a level (e.g. to middle or down) or simply put into neutral, it wasn’t so easy. I could finally get it there after pushing, pulling and finagling with it – but I never really understood what I did to get it there. I feel like it should’ve been easier than that. What am I missing? Thank you! (I know this is a dumb question by the way, but I have nowhere else to turn.)

  • Welcome aboard and kudos in your new tractor. If you don't already have them I suggest you invest in the Essential Owner's Manual and a copy of the CLYMER/I&T FO20 manual. Does your shifter cover have this diagram?

  • This is great - Thank you! Mystery solved. I could see the gear pattern on my tractor, but not the “N” because it was covered with smut. Thanks again!

  • I wish the shift pattern on my Ford tractors had some smut on them lol. Just ribbing you, congrats on your purchase.

  • I grew up on one of these 5 speeds in a 63 Ford 4000. Slick as a whistle and very dependable. I always thought about it like a 3 layer cake with a up and down slot in the middle. Top layer is R + 3 , middle layer is 1 + 2, bottom layer is 4+5. Pretty simple. Middle slot up and down is neutral. If yours is working ok you should figure it out and get used to it in no time. Good luck.
