  • Hello,
    Hello all,

    First time back in years. Glad you are still here.

    I just got involved with helping my son sort out a 9N. I had an 8N years ago and was often accessing this group of experts to keep it going. Anyway, I don't recall if the PTO needs to be engaged in order for the 3/pt to lift? On this tractor it only raises if the PTO is engaged and thus the mower is spinning. Also I have a question about why the 3 pt won't stay up.....falls immedately after PTO is disengaged or the engine is shut off.

  • With a PTO driven mower, you will also need an over ride clutch.
    A ratcheting thingy.

  • The PTO must be on, AND, there is no position control on a 9N, only draft control. Use limit chains to set the height of your mower.

  • I might also suggest a Mower Deck Height Stabilizer Kit.
    That way it will stay up even with the PTO turned off.

  • Limiter Check Chains would hold up a mower but he definetly has hyd system issues so why not get to the root cause and fix it. The 9N and 2N only have DRAFT control, 8N introduced POSITION control, but aftermarket POSITION CONTROL devices are available -see RED ROCK MFG.

  • Yes, the PTO can only operate when the lever is engaged -depress clutch, move forward. Get your ESSENTIAL OWNER/OPERATOR/PARTS/SERVCE MANUALS out and read up. Your hydraulic system is severely worn out. The likely culprit is a leaking cylinder from wear and tear. I highly suggest you read the manuals, watch the video, and go to our How-To’s forum before attempting this project especially if you’ve never done it before. There are certain precautions you need to be aware of. The cylinder is bolted to the underside of the top cover with four bolts under the seat area. If you remove them BEFORE you pull the top cover you will do extensive damage to the unit and have a massive project getting it off then. The hydraulic system repair isn't that big of a job, but is very time consuming. It’s best to have a helper too. The OEM N-Series hydraulic cylinder used a 3-steel ring piston. This was replaced with the NAA-530-A piston with a rubber O-Ring. It is a better design and will also work on the 9N,2N, and 8N as well. You will need a new cylinder (don't try to reuse old one); a new piston; a gasket kit; a new safety relief valve; and possibly some pump parts. Get the pump off and on your bench. You are going to want to inspect the aluminum pump base and if cracked will need to replace it. READ all the manuals first. The CLYMER/I&T FO-04 Manual has an excellent chapter on removal, rebuilding, reinstalling the system. I might also suggest at this time you consider rebuilding the PTO shaft seal and bearing. When you go to ordering parts, New parts can be found at trusty sites like Dennis Carpenter and Just8ns. you can get the whole gasket kit (p/n 9N-500K), cylinder (p/n 9N-510-D ), piston (p/n NAA-530-B ), O-Ring (p/n NAA-533-A), and backup wiper/washer (NAA-473-A) - see LINK.   • Yes, because the pto shaft drives the hydraulic pump. Won't stay up because it has a leak. See diagram for 8N (9N differs in valving).
