  • Starter gear wont index far enur into flywheel and is damaging the edges of the gears.
    the start doesn't apear to original how ever it fit as is should. part number comes back to a newer model maasey tractor.
    when i removed the starter i bench tested it and the gear movew foward but not far if i manualy move it i can get anther qtr inch of foward movement.
    is their a spring inside the start or bendix ive never worked on a starter this old any info would be appericated

    If the starter part number says it is for a Massey, then it definitely is not original or correct, thus the problem you are having. The original starter was a combination of Ford 8N and custom Funk parts. A previous owner probably found a starter that was very close and worked as long as they owned it. Not sure if you bench tested it with a battery or by hand, but when the starter is powered up, the drive will be flung out to the end of the nose. There is no adjustment and it goes only as far as it was designed to. Maybe with some ingenuity you can squeeze some more stroke out of it depending on how it is designed.

    I assume you have a Funk with the flathead six. Original starters are around but not easily found. There is a company that makes a modern starter that fits the flathead engines (see the link below). Good luck.
