  • valve replacement
  • I needed to adjust the valves on my 8N. Found one of the valve springs was broken, so valve overhaul is in the works. The oil gallery was covered with built up oil sludge, so I need to clean the gallery simultaneously. I need your advice on a couple of items:
    1. Valve kits seem to be either rotating valves and non-rotating. Which one do I need?
    2. Since I'll be cleaning the gallery, I figure I will need to drop the oil pan and clean it out.

So, I figure I'll need a head gasket, oil pan gasket, valve rebuild kit (but, which one???), oil filter. Have I missed anything, or any other gaskets? I know that doing one thing leads to another on these tractors so, let me know if I need anything else, or, do anything else.
1950 8N serial number #8N344871 on the engine block.

  • You may find the job easier to do if the manifold is also removed, which (of course) would require a new manifold gasket.

  • You don't absolutely need rotating valves. If you have adjustable lifters you will find the holding devices helpful in getting them set. There are kits sold that include springs, guides, valves and all. I haven't done one lately, but I seem to recall there was a difference in the retainers or keepers between intake and exhaust. You may find it necessary to create a sturdy hooked pry bar to help depress the guides to install the clips.
