  • 12v generator
  • Hi guys, I need your knowledge

I have a VR35 Standard Motor Voltage Regulator, that I would like to use with my 12v field coil converted generator. My question is: What are the internal wiring connections I have to make on the generator for this regulator to work on my 1952 8N? As I live in Chile it is very difficult to get a different VR.

  • Another option is to eschew the VR & GEN altogether and opt to go to with an alternator as you already have a 12V battery source. Dennis Carpenter sells parts internationally but shipping is estimated at $60.00 or 60% of the total of the order. If it is over sized parts the shipping is a lot more and the shipping does not include duties or brokerage fees -those are due upon arrival of the parts. I have the correct VR and an OEM, rebuilt 8N-10000B generator but also would cost you 5 times the amount. Use JMOR's WIRING PICTOGRAMS for connecting the side mount 8N distributor setup to 12V. You will need to change all lamps to 12V units too if not already done. 12V sealed beam headlights are Industry Standard #4419.

  • Thanks Tim, I have the alternator solution in one of my other 8N

  • Re: 12v generator
  • Really need more information..VR35 appears to be intended for use with Type-B generator (voltage applied to generator Field by the VR), whereas the 1952 8N was Type-A generator (Field supplied voltage from armature connection inside generator & VR supplied a ground to generator Field post).. Of course these connections can be changed (I have done it).

  • Thanks JMOR for your interest on helping me.
I don't know if the generator is type A or B. It has three posts, armature, field and ground. I would like to know how should I make the generator internal wiring connection for it to work properly with VR35 .

  • Sorry JMOR, I re-checked your emails and realized that I have to connect my generator as a type B one for my VR35..

  • Re: 12v generator
  • Are your field coil connections inside generator like upper left or like lower left?

  • Generator is a two-brush one. I can make any of the two connection. Which one is the correct for VR35?
In both cases polarization is touching field to battery post on VR?

  • Re: 12v generator
  • Polarization is as here. Please note that with "B" circuit, the field to VR connection must NOT be connected during polarization or you will burn VR's field contacts!

Changes inside generator for "A" type, to make it a "B" type to match your VR35. Red marks are cuts.

  • Re: 12v generator
  • I'll do as recommended by you.
    Many thanks, JMOR.

  • Re: 12v generator
  • I think that I ruined the voltage regulator before following JMOR recommendations, because the generator shows no voltage. There is no voltage on the field post too. I check the genny feeding the field with the armature post and the voltage went up if I speed up the engine.
I think I need to buy a new VR. Could you please recommend me which one to buy for the 12v dc generator connected as a type B one.
