  • Tranny woes
  • I am so close to getting this tractor running its not even funny. I think my timing is off. Should be an easy fix. My main dilemma is the transmission. I removed the cover to replace the starter button. Now it stays in neutral no matter what position the shifter is in. When I move the forks and the gears engage, it wont roll almost like it stuck in two gears. What can I do to get this fixed?

  • I guess I should have included the year and model. Its a 1952 8n with a four speed.

  • Pull the cover again and make sure the slots are lined up. When you put the cover back on, make sure the shift handle engages without moving. Drop in two or three bolts to get it snugged down and gently try shifting.
    Haste makes Waste.

  • First, what tractor model are you talking about and do you have the Essential Manuals ? Don't guess at problems. Perform root cause problem solving methods. Timing and transmission are two totally different animals and unrelated. Next, there are three different Neutral Safety Starter Pushbuttons. How did you determine yours was defective? We will assume it hasn't been running even before you did the button but what else have you done? Is it 6V/POS GRN or a 12V switch out job? Either way, is it wired correctly? Do you have a front mount or an angle mount distributor?
