Looking at How To >> Spark plug
The manual states Automatic Spark Advance .... governor...
Just what am I reading here?
As you know my 50 is misfiring badly and I`m searching for the Gremlin...
    Thanks in Advance,

  • The F04 Picture of governor parts does not list spark advance as such...
    I`m puzzled,
    Dennis

That's because the governor has nothing to do with the spark advance. The spark is advanced by the weights in the distributor under the plate.

Lots of causes for it to misfire; start w/ the most likely. Firing order is 1-2-4-3, CCW.

  • Re: Automatic spark advance question
  • Thanks Bruce, I didn`t think there was any spark advance by way of governor...
I`m still pondering what could could > warm up and change so it misfires and loses power...
Is there anything to what someone said about the Cam bearings being worn, causing the cam to rattle???

    I`m lost without my N,
    Dennis

Yeah, the (new to us) Case 685 will do the job, BUT I LOVE My Ns

  • I wish I could edit ;)
Looking at F-04 picture of cam/crank I don`t see cam bearings...
There is a spring at the ends I think could cause the cam to rattle intermittantly,
    IF it were faulty?????

  • N's don't have cam bearings.

So it only misfires when it's hot?

Have you checked the firing order?

    Front or side distributor?

  • Side Mount...
I`ll double check BUT I just put a new cap on the distributor and am sure I got firing order correct...
    Thank You Bruce

Does the distributor shaft have any movement at all?

  • I "finger tested" the dist. shaft, I do not feel any play...
And the side mount dist. is tight in place...
Yes, it runs fine through Crank up - move across the yard, leave idling to hook up implement THEN starts acting up maybe four minutes into working with the cultivator (last time I ran it) so, what? 10 minutes? Less than 15 minutes run time...

I call it Cam rattle cause that`s what was told me AND it doies sound like that area...
    Valve Train Rattle Maybe???

  • I swapped the coil when I went through the ignition parts replacing...
I dunno IF I put it in this thread, BUT I`ve been posting over the last couple months with this issue...
I had the thought this morning, I need to "Read my sparkplugs" for which is misfiring too...
I`m Headed out to see right now,

  • Three plugs are really black but dry, One is black and wet...
Looks like oil don`t smell of gas...
SO I`ll go back to HowTos for plug reading,
    Dennis

  • Re: Automatic spark advance question
  • According to the chart pictures > Carbon fouling and oil fouling appears to be the diagnosis >>
SO We`ll se what I can do about that...
IF the "float stuck" were the problem this carburator usually dumps gas IF I forget to shut off fuel supply valve when I park...
I did too, I forgot AND there`s no gas on the ground, SO, the float is OK...
Running rich is listed in the chart,
    Dennis

Yes, she smokes a little sometimes, before
