  • Replacing engine on 8N
  • Would there be any changes necessary in changing a front mount distributor engine in an 8N to a side mount engine?

  • I swapped the strong running engine from my trusty 2N into a smoky 8N that I bought thinking I would upgrade tractors.
Both were front mounts with 6V/original wiring. It was a Very simple swap. I reused the wiring that was original to each tractor. Only surprise was the external oil lines were different. Don't remember just why now but I had to swap those too. That was 18 years ago.
I started about 8 am and had both tractors running again by about 4 pm. That was the first time I had ever driven an 8N and I was horrified to learn how fast the reverse speed was on it.
    I almost swapped them back.

  • Cams are different for another. In my opinion, it would easier, and cheaper to just find a complete angle mount short block and swap the whole kit and caboodle out. I just saw a side mount on ebay the other day -$500 I think -shipping extra, and no relation to seller. There are plenty of archive posts on swap-outs.

  • The generator will likely be on the left side... it kinda depends on how complete an engine you have available to install...
