  • Sherman 54 B or C backhoe compatible with Ford 850?
  • Hi there,

Just curious if anyone knows for sure if a Sherman 54 B or C backhoe is compatible with a Ford 850?

Didn't know if a Sherman transmission on an 8n would be required for the hoe to operate properly?

Would it be a pretty direct bolt up to an 850?

    Any info would be appreciated!

  • Here's a sherman backhoe on my 640. You would need the correct frame for your tractor but yes they did make them to fit.

  • Thanks for the messages guys! That was definitely one of my questions, whether the frame would mount the same, if the frame had to be modified or if there were different frames.

My reason for asking about the Sherman transmission is that in the 54B installation manual listed on this site, it says: "To obtain the best digger operation (proper PTO speed) the tractor should be equipped with a Sherman Combination Transmission. While the digger is being operated, run engine at 1750RPM (3/4 throttle) with the Combination Transmission in step-up range."

I know the Sherman transmission won't fit an 850. I don't have any experience with 8ns or the Sherman transmission so I didn't know how critical of an issue this would be if I were to mount one of these backhoes to an 850.

  • My 640 does have a 4 speed with sherman combo. The sherman in step up range will spin the pto pump faster and give you a quicker response. My friend Bill has Bruce Dorsi's old 54B sherman backhoe on an 8n. I can see if the frame hook up is similar to my 640 hookup. I know his pump was 1 1/8 pto shaft as mine is too. Part of the production run in 1957 the shafts were changed to the standard 1 3/8 shaft something else you may consider if yours is a later 850

  • Thanks Kirk!

Our 850 is a late '57 I believe. What I really wasn't sure about was how the 850 would spin the pump compared to a Sherman step up, and if the difference would be much of a big deal.

  • A late '57 will surely have the standard 1 3/8 pto shaft. There are adapters to step down to 1 1/8 shaft. As long as you are not in a hurry and not doing commercial work I wouldn't worry about it. You would probably have to run it at a higher RPM. If your proofmeter works you will see setting for PTO. You will want to be above the Pulley line running somewhere around 2000. Of course this is with no load on it

  • I can't remember if the original pump on the 54B fit a 1-1/8" or a 1-3/8" PTO shaft.

I had a 54B on an 8N, which did have the Sherman combo aux trans. ...Without running the PTO in "Step-Up" mode, you could dig as fast with a manual shovel. ...The higher PTO speed was definitely necessary!

  • Paul I have no knowledge of Sherman backhoes or loaders, but I can tell you that a Sherman Step Up, Step Down, or Combination units will Not fit any 5 speed transmission. SoS
