  • Have steering box on bench reassembled but something isn't right. When steering gets to the middle where wheels would be straight steering wants to tighten up and bind. Once past the middle right or left it's free with no binding. When I originally tried adjusting it I went by the different steps in F-04 manual with using the scale to measure resistance. That really made it bind in the middle. After reading alot of archives on adjusting I thought it may be due to thickness of shims and wheel may be going up and down. That's not happening. Tried pulling steering at different positions and it's not moving up and down. Old shims thickness 0.075 new ones 0.070. This is what I've done. Cleaned all of it completely including the worm with all 60 balls back in. 30 each side. Lower bearing, upper bearing and race, all new at steering wheel, eyelet, retainer and seals completely. Sectors are properly aligned on the worm and with each other. What I didn't replace was any of the bushings for sectors. They were smooth and seemed to be okay. I can slightly move sectors on the outside when I try to wiggle them. As of now there's no grease or oil in housing but all the gears and bearings were sprayed with WD-40 to keep them from rusting till I know everything is correct. So is my problem the bushings???? Alll help will be greatly appreciated because I'm stumped. Hayes49

  • Bushings are potentially giving you a side load transferring into the box.

  • I also used a service manual I bought from YT. It refers to using a spring scale. FO-4 manual or any of the archives I've searched I've never seen any mention of using a scale. So I've since added oil and used just the FO-4 manual paragraph 18 and everything is good. Thanks for the reply.
