So we have the motor back and mounted to the tractor. We had a very reputable machine shop replace the sleeves, new pistons, rings, and rebuild on the head. We bought the newer style governor and installed it last night. Crankshaft was also turned. So here are a couple of questions....

    1. The crankshaft pulley appears to be what forms the front seal at the governor. While we had it apart, we painted the back of the pulley. Should we remove this paint so it is bare metal against the rubber seal?

    2. In assembly of the water jacket, does the thermostat sit here or is it inserted in one of the hoses? I remember people talking about it, but do not remember the details for the Jubilee. Also, which way should the thermostat be turned? I know I do not want it to be turned backwards.

Thank you guys in advance for the help. We really appreciate it.

  • No one with better experience chimed in. Lacking better knowledge,
Stat goes in the upper hose, bulb towards engine. I also drill a 1/16 hole in it somewhere to allow any trapped air to get through. That hole also allows better heat transfer and minimizes temp surges within the engine getting the stat to open.
Paint on any surface against a rubber seal will both wear off and wear out a rubber seal. Might not be a good idea.

  • Thank you Bruce! You are the best!!!!

That is exactly what I was thinking on the pulley. I already have the paint removed. I wasn’t sure on the thermostat.

I need to check the gap between the rocker arms and the tops of the valves and will then be ready to bolt down the valve cover. I wish we could have gotten the motor back during the summer so we would have had more time. This is definitely a busy time of year for us, especially this year with COVID.

  • You can stick a thermostat in the upper hose if you want, but the proper thermostat goes in the thermostat housing on the front of the engine.
