  • 960 Voltage Regulator
  • Looking for a voltage regulator that works for my 960. Bought one from CNH and it was dead on arrival and being an electrical part they refused to take it back. I asked on the other board as I believe JMOR had just informed a person of a source of a reliable one for a guys 860 of course my post was deleted.

  • Ron's Auto Electric in Windsor Maine stocks quality voltage regulators for the early ford tractors. They are not cheap but they work. I have used him many times over the years and have never been disappointed. Just last week I needed an A circuit regulator for a Farmall Cub and a Ford 8N and he had both in stock. Yours would be a B circuit and he stocks those as well.

  • How did you determine the VR was DOA? Did you polarize the generator with the new VR?Yes? How? Your 900 uses a 'B' Circuit Generator. Are you wired as the OEM 6V/POS GRN unit? Verified your wiring is all correct? The I&T FO-20 Manual is also a big help with wiring schematic.

  • By carefully following all procedures as outlined in the Ford Tractor Service Manual SE-8175. Yes it is 6V pos ground as original. When The regulator still showed as being faulty I took it to my good friend that owns the largest remaining Auto Electric Repair shop in our area and they confirmed my findings agreeing it was junk. They even called the CNH people on my behalf and they still would not refund any of my money!

  • Gasser-
How was the VR tested? Did you or your shop polarize the genny? I don't think any OEM FORD manual states how to polarize the generator. The I&T Manuals do. Don't know your guy nor repair shop, don't really care. It doesn't matter if you have 5 weeks or 50 years of experience, if you don't know Ford Electrical Systems, you don't know, and are grasping at straws. If you grounded the BAT and ARM connections together, just touching contact for a second, you would fry the VR. Equate it with Sleepy Joe Biden. Though he has been in politics for 70 years, he knows nothing and has done nothing pro-American in his career.

  • On a test bench made for testing and analyzing generator and regulator systems, how else? Yes the SE-8175 outlines the polarization process very clearly along with regulator checking. Finally, the CNH regulator now is indeed junk, our garbage service hauled it away this morning.

  • I know of no source for quality VRs as I believe all are Chinese made.

That said, if looking for one, I would look to Standard Ignition, Sorensen, or Echlin.

Best option is a good used one that is 20+ years old.

Was the one that you bought from CNH from an aftermarket supplier such as A & I, Spares, etc., or was it in a genuine CNH package?

  • CNH box that I had to tear the sealing paper to open.

  • Re: 960 Voltage Regulator
  • Not surprised.

Thought that all are Chinese made. Probably the Std. Ign., Echlin, etc., ones as well.

I would look for a take out after a 12V conversion.

  • Try Dennis Carpenter or JUST8Ns for p/n FAG-10505-A, 6V, used '53-'64, $32.50 from my book.
