  • Dumb thing on tractor
  • Been messing with a ford 4000 4cyl. ,sos transmission. I have been really careful with this thing until a few days ago. I went to start it as I was standing in front of the rear wheel !!! DUMB,DUMB!!! Only thing that saved me was when I backed it up I shoved the throttle completely forward just creeping back to the barn. If the throttle had been opened up ,I would not be here or in a mess. Plus had a 6 mower on behind!!!! Hope this makes someone else think about what we are doing!!! I WAS LUCKY THIS TIME!!!!

  • I'm glad you were not hurt bad or killed. Lots of people have not been so lucky. I've harped on this for years. It's so quick to happen when it does. The Best safe place for sure to be when starting a SOS equipped tractor is sitting in the seat. If the traction coupling is disengaged and securely bolted or locked in position, only then is it safe (somewhat) to start and run the engine from the ground. More often than not the safety switch under the top cover of the trans fails, the "Quick Fix" being to jump wire it, and the proper repair or replacement never happens or is thought of again until it is too late. Key word: Hindsight. Time, wear, tear, and the Ruthless Hand of Ignorance affecting the shifter and control cable compounds the problem. A transmission that is damaged internally can malfunction, Even With The Shifter Securely In The Park Position, and lunge either forward or reverse when the engine starts. I have experienced this scenario firsthand. Again I'm glad you are not hurt or worse. SoS
