  • I just bought a 1950 8n with a 6 cylinder Funk Conversion. The dealer in Ohio put in a new 12 volt battery--it had a 12 volt in it before so we assume a 12 volt conversion. The negative cable went to ground.

When the tractor arrived in Mobile the battery was completely dead.

I have several questions. Is the key in the vertical position on or off--it was vertical when it arrived.

Is connecting the negative to ground correct or is this a positive ground? Will I damage anything if I try the positive to ground?

    Thanks for the help.

  • Does the tractor have an alternator? If so, most likely it is a Negative ground.

If it has the standard ignition setup, changing the polarity should not harm anything. If it has electronic ignition, likely that would be destroyed if connected wrong.

If the key was left on most likely your points will require replacement.

Without a meter or a test light and some charge in the battery, Kevin has given you the way.

    Good Luck!

  • If the key will come out regardless of vertical/horizontal it is off. If it won't come out in whatever position it is in, it is on.

  • Thanks--the key was left on. Horizontal is off, vertical is on.

  • There is no way to answer your questions without more information.

Many, many things may have been done to your tractor since 1950.
