  • 52 8N starter/drive 12V conversion
  • Wonder if anyone has tried a 6V regulator or big ol resistor or something between 12V battery and starter solenoid on a 12V converted 8N ?
I'm having starter drive problems as well as ring gear teeth chipping.
Starter drive 'spins out' causing tractor motor to be bound up till I remove starter and spin starter drive back home on bench grinder.
The drive is fairly new but made in India, I purchased another one that was more $$$ but its country of origin wasn't advertised.
I love my 8N, but the quality of foreign replacement parts has been less than satisfactory.

  • Everyone's experience is different! Myself & my FIL before me have been running 12v on 8N with 6v starter continuously for more than 25 years without starter, bendix, or ring gear problems. Maybe on next start attempt?

  • Such is one of the more serious problems experienced when using a 6V starter with a 12V battery.

The proper solution (aside from reverting to a properly functioning 6V system) is to have your OEM starter rebuilt with 12V field coils. Not cheap.

  • Get your oem starter rebuilt. Or buy one and have it rebuilt.

If your ring gear is not already damaged beyond repair, it will be soon.
