  • 53 Jubilee PTO won't engage
  • I recently had to replace the clutch disc in my 1953 Ford Jubilee tractor. I re-assembled the clutch & it performed excellent along with the other components such as hydraulic system, lift and proofmeter. However, the PTO will not engage. The PTO was operating excellent prior to splitting the tractor. The tractor does have hydraulic pressure because the lift works. The shop manual indicates it requires hydraulic pressure to disengage the PTO, however it makes no mention of hydraulic pressure to engage it, nor does the shop manual give any trouble shooting guidance.

  • Hey Ultradog MN, thanks for replying. The shifter will not shift, as it were welded in place. It worked fine before placing the clutch disc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • I'm thinking it's unrelated to your having split the tractor for the clutch.
I would remove the round cover where the pto handle is and have a look inside.
I'm not as well versed on those as the later tractors but the handle generally just moves a sliding coupler that connects the pto shaft to the output shaft on the back end of the transmission.
It is a very simple mechanism actually.
The coupler is likely under the oil in there so you'll need to drain the oil in the rear end first.

  • You should be able to pull the small round cover with the pto lever on it without draining any oil. But you are 100% right Ultradog about the sliding coupler that the lever controls and it has nothing to do with the clutch or hydraulics. Do like Ultradog says and pull the round pto lever plate and see if you can see what is keeping the sliding coupler from moving.

  • Does it grind when you try to put the pto in gear or will the handle simply not shift?
Your issue has nothing to do with the hydraulics.
On a Jube/NAA (and newer) the hydraulic system and clutch/pto are two totally unrelated systems.
In other words, you don't need hyds for the clutch/pto to work and you don't need clutch/pto for the hyds to work.
