  • 801 rear main seal
  • Rebuilding a 172 engine for an 801 tractor and have a question on how to install the seals along the rear main bearing block. The Ford Manual says to soak the seals in oil then immediately insert them in the bearing block. The new seals that came with my gasket set did not swell after soaking them in oil and inserting. How do these new seals work?

  • The side seals on the rear main cap is an area that can be an issue. The original style seals were designed to swell with oil contact. Another style is a rubber seal that gets a small steel rod driven into. I did not have luck with either of those types. I ended up using Victor Reinz sealant in the sides of the rear main cap. Seven years now with no leak.
