  • I have an 8n Funk conversion. The previous owner is dead, so no information there. The PTO shaft has been removed and a cover bolted on. I thought that there would be a PTO shaft under it and got a hydraulic fluid bath when I took it off.

Does anyone have an idea why the shaft would be removed? Can I just replace it without worrying about a disaster? Can I engage the PTO to run the lift--I haven't tried it yet?

  • Not sure if you know, but the PTO shaft needs to be installed before the lift will work. The hydraulic pump is powered by the PTO shaft. Also check to make sure you have a hydraulic pump in the belly of the rear housing. The previous owner may have also removed that when the PTO shaft was removed.

No idea why the shaft was removed. Maybe it was in the way of something that was attached to the rear of the tractor, or maybe the seal or bearing went out and they didn't want to fix it.

  • Very helpful information.

How do I check if there is a pump present?

    Thanks--Steve

  • Your Funk conversion, an engine substitute, is from the transmission forward. Everything in the transmission and differential should be the same. Install a PTO shaft and engage it with the lever by your left heel. Give us feedback.
