  • Battery Cables
  • I need to replace both battery cables for my '51 8N. Should I get factory replacements, or is there better options? What gauge should I get? It's a 6V system.

  • Get everything you need at Dennis Carpenter or JUST8Ns -see LINK. Why not get the OEM style, exact-as-original that Carpenter makes rather than some wally-world P-O-S? 6V requires heavier/thicker cables for current conductivity. Be sure to get the correct part numbers, the 9N are different lengths.

  • 6 volt negative cables need to be at least 00 gage, about the equivalent of welding cables. The 6 volt positive ground should be the woven ground strap available from many suppliers.

  • Thank you. Just to clarify, the ground cable that bolts to the block/frame should be woven ground strap, right? And the cable from the battery to the starter solenoid should be the 00 gauge? Is that correct?

  • I don't see gauge ratings on flat ground cables. I did a little research on them, and discovered that flat braid wire carries current better than round braided sections! They say that the strands are more parallel in flat braid, causing less resistance.

This link has more information and the flat braid part is halfway down the page.
