  • Bad and Good battery experience today
  • I have a 1945 2N. Doesn't get used much. I have taken it to several shows and a couple of parades. I try to run it a couple of times a year. This summer I had trouble starting it when hot. Did all the usually electric things without a lot of success. I could start it if I bypassed the resistor and ignition switch. Changed the ignition switch with no positive results. The battery was less than one year old. Yesterday I tried to start it to change the oil and do the pre winter maintenance. The battery was stone cold dead. Would not even begin to take a charge. debated letting it sit until next spring, but decided to replace the battery. When I removed the battery (purchased at Orschelns a midwest farm and home chain), I noticed in bold white letters on the battery "Replaced free if it fails in less than one year". Took it back to the store and exchanged it - no questions asked. Put the new battery in and it started right up. Battery was 11 months old, Sure am glad I did not wait until spring!

  • Interestingly, and coincidentally, I spent the day cleaning up my lawn equipment for winter storage and decided to fireup my '40 9N and my '47 2N. Neither had been started in over a year. Both needed a battery boost and a squirt of starting fluid.
I took each out for a spin.
The '40 needs an oil change (shame on me). That will happen tomorrow.

  • Lead acid batteries that are not used for intended purpose regularly should be charged at least every 4-6 weeks.

Failuree to do so will shorten the life considerably.

The failure to start condition unless the primary resistor is bypassed indicates weak ignition and/or weak battery/cranking system.
