  • Hello everyone. I have noticed that when posting images to not use the https and instead use http linking to the image. If the link you copy has the https in the url, just delete the s and it should work.

  • The industry STRONGLY recommends you use the secure socket layer (HTTPS) connection for HTTP exchanges. It works just as well as the unencrypted (HTTP) connection and is more secure.

  • Re: Test
  • Do we really need to encrypt an image of our tractors or parts? I tested before I posted and it still holds true; when posting on the forum, pull the image using http instead of https.

I don't want to get in an argument; however, there is no need to encrypt all internet traffic. This was a Google mandate and since people didn't want their websites rankings decreased, everyone jumped on board. With the increased in computers and servers processing speed, it isn't that big of a deal to encrypt a photo of that cute little kitten but it really isn't needed. What is there for a middle man attack to steal in a photo of your dog chasing his tail?

And yes, I am in the business; I do server work on a daily basis.

  • Re: Test
  • You do it because it is best practice and may well become the only supported connection. If you do "server work" then you should know:

    • The impetus for this comes from the developer and standards community at large (e.g. W3C) not Google.
    • Support for HTTP is rapidly waning.
    • If the site gives you an HTTPS transport URL that is what they want you to use and have designed their system to support that processing
    • Well managed (e.g. secure) servers don't know you are asking for a picture of Kitty and will simply redirect your port 80 HTTP connection to port 443 (HTTPS) at significant additional overhead and cost to the network, server, and client. Then the server and client will incur the cost of encrypting and decrypting Kitty anyway.
I am also in the business. I have been designing small and large scale network systems and writing network code since 1973 when the "Internet" was a just a few PDP-11's and BBN C30s located in a few server rooms like mine, data links were Bell 303 modems and 56KB leased lines, TCP/IP and DNS had not yet been invented, and the WWW apple had not yet hit Sir Tim Berners-Lee on the head. I have learned to put my personal prejudices aside and go with the best practice recommendations of the industry - it always works out better in the end.

  • Re: Test
  • Del - are you copying and pasting from your account or are you trying to type in the url manually? Here is a the easier way to copy and paste your picture link from IMGUR. Follow the procedure I outlined below in previous post. Instead of using the 'DIRECT LINK' function, scroll down to the one "HTML (web site/blogs)" Click "COPY" and you get a dialog box saying ALLOW or NOT and just 'X' it out, you don't need that. URL box becomes highlighted in green - cursor on it to copy then simply paste that into your message. I use the direct link and add the [center] code so my picture gets centered in my post. I also use a WORD program to test run my messages and pictures so I an do a 'PREVIEW' operation before actually posting my message. This way if a picture didn't come out or I made a typo, I can go back to the WORD document and see why it didn't work and fix it. Often I will miss typing in the quotation marks using the SYMBOL function in WORD not using the keyboard stroke -they are different. By using the aforementioned easy method, you don't have to add anything like that -just copy and paste. Right click over my picture, from the drop down menu, scroll all the way down to PROPERTIES and left click. Another drop down menu appears. Under ADDRESS (URL) is the http code for that picture. Highlight, copy, an paste in a message then add quotes. If you want to save that picture to your PC, just right click on it and select Save As then select where you want to save it in. Your text in your picture message must contain the Left & Right Arrows with quotation marks.

  • Re: Test
  • I have no experience using imgur but there should be some option for obtaining a direct link to the image file.

The one you are getting is for the imgur page that they use to display the image. If while viewing that page you right click on the image itself you will get a drop down with option to copy image url. Click on that option and use the copied url to link the image in forum posts. That is how I obtained the last one.

  • I pulled up the archives and seems you had this issue back in FEB 2019 -same thing. I then found another old post with one of your pictures and I was able to see it and look at the properties. So must be something you are not doing right as your account works fine. Check the html code again and copy the direct link as I expressed below.

  • Can you open your Imgur account when you login? You are missing the .jpg extension in your LINK. Here’s what I do: Log on to your IMGUR account; select a photo from your library and place cursor over photo –it will highlight green in box around photo; LEFT click on photo and a menu opens up. At the bottom is a box with SIZES listed. I use “HUGE THUMBNAIL” and place cursor on it and left click –it also will highlight in green. On the RH side of menu is a list: “View and Edit Post”. From the list I select “DIRECT LINK” and cursor over the blue COPY button and left click once. A dialog box appears to ask “Do you want to allow this website…” and just ‘X” it out. The DIRECT LINK box turns green. Place cursor on the green box and RIGHT click once. From the pull down then select ‘COPY’. This is the url code to insert into your message. You aren’t done yet though. You need to include more html code in the message link. Paste your url in your message, then you need to add at the front of the link a left arrow (<) symbol, the word ‘center’, then a right arrow symbol (>) then another LEFT arrow symbol with the words ‘img src”=’ and note the space, equal sign, then quotation marks. At the end of the link, it will end with .jpg, add quotation mark; RIGHT arrow; LEFT arrow; backslash (to cancel); then RIGHT arrow so the entire text is with a LEFT arrow at the beginning and a RIGHT arrow at the end of the link.

IMGUR EXAMPLE – RIGHT click mouse over picture, scroll down to ‘Properties’ from the drop down menu, and highlight to view, save as, or copy the link. You will need to add the html code if you insert into another message. You can RIGHT click over any picture from anybody’s message and select ‘Save As’ from the menu to just save a copy of the picture to your desktop.

    MY EXAMPLE:

  • I thought this would be a simple mistake on your end but not so fast. As Artie says - "Very Interesting..."

The source code in your post looks good, the image link opens fine if I copy and paste the URL into the address bar of a new browser window, but it doesn't work in this reply either:

I also created my own little test page on my web server with that image link and that doesn't work. So it's early morning and I just poured my first cup of coffee but off the top of my head I am going to say this is some bizarre problem on imgur's side.

What about it HFJ - Nick Danger have any insights?
