  • 8N high crop
  • 8n Silt tractor. You just don't see many come up for sale. If it was closer I would have to own it. Even cheaper with the money exchange.

  • A good friend, Charlie Hardesty from the F/FCA has one. Robert Pripps and Randy Leffingwell have pictures and a little text in their Ford Tractor books. Here is the only ad known for the Tractor Stilts Robert Pripps has. The text and adjoining photo are of the late Dwight Emstrom’s 1952 8N HI-CROP, with 11 x 40 rears and a 7” clearance. Mr. Leffingwell has a photo of a 1944 2N with similar rears. There were a few aftermarket companies making them in this style. He also has photos of an 850, 950, and a Ferguson 35. HI-CROPs and STILTS were used in the south a lot for rice and cotton fields as well as spraying.

  • Actually this is a very rare high crop. Originally had a large tank installed to liquid fertilizing corn.

  • I can't speak Canadien... ; > ) [grin] (Listing is in Quebec, eh)

Usually these were used in areas like rice and cotton farms. I don't know how may rice and cotton farms there are in Canada, but seems a long way from home. Never a Ford Highland Park Factory item, as many companies cashed in on the popularity of the FORD N-Series Tractor, these were made by THE TRACTOR STILTS CO. INC of Omaha, Nebraska. They offered two versions -a 4 foot clearance model and a 6-1/2 foot clearance model. Extras include a case of Molson, a pound of back bacon, and an NHL hockey puck! It's a rare bargain even at Canadien dollars. Getting thru Customs at the US border would be a nightmare. They want paperwork for everything.

  • Québec, a province of Canada. They speak French. If you are a Canadian and want to do business there, you better speak French.
While at GM, I had to call a dealership in Montreal. Before they would speak to me in english, I had to tell them who I was, why I was calling, that I was in US and that I did not speak French. I got perfect English speaker response.

  • Right you are. When I was managing a large marine construction fleet on the Lakes and East coast I had business in Montreal. Had a lot of problems with the language outside the business circle where they all were quite willing to speak English. One of them said when roaming around town I needed to look like a tourist rather an anglophile. So being nice summer weather I started wearing shorts and always a Budweiser hat with sunglasses, Know what, hardly ever heard a word of French after that.

  • There is one 10 miles from me in Northern New York. They used to use it on sweet corn.

  • They were built for detasseling corn.
Dunno why you'd want/need to detassel corn but that's what they were for.

  • Detasseling is done in hybrid seed corn production.

  • To eliminate the possibility of cross pollination as in producing a new or improved strain of corn seed.
